Four friends, six nights, and everyone stood up

The plan

Priya and three friends took the short flight from Singapore for a first-ever surf week, six nights in September, once the July–August crowds and the 20% high-season rates had gone. They split two suites: Segara, with its pool-deck access and outdoor rain shower, and Taman, its king converted to twins. Sarah arranged beginner surf lessons at Batu Bolong, six minutes from the gate by scooter, and blocked two days with Gede’s air-conditioned 7-seater for the longer runs, Uluwatu, an hour and a half south, and Tanah Lot for sunset. Gede met them at DPS with a name sign, $35 each way for the van.

The stay

Mornings were for whitewater at Batu Bolong; by day three, all four of them could stand up. Afternoons were for the 16-metre pool and in-villa massages from $18 an hour, which the surf-sore shoulders voted the best money of the trip. Chef Wayan put on a wood-fired pizza night after their biggest session. On the Tanah Lot evening, Gede talked the group through temple etiquette before anyone stepped out of the van, sarongs, where to walk, when to keep quiet. The Uluwatu day ended with all four asleep in the 7-seater long before Canggu.

The verdict

The villa side came to $1,960, both suites for six nights, two van days with Gede and the airport transfers, which split four ways at $490 each, with surf lessons paid locally on top. The vote on the flight home was unanimous: same week next September, plus a campaign to recruit six more friends, because the whole villa sleeps ten from $545 a night.
